Species:
Puff Adder (Bitis arietans)

Classification: Dangerously Venomous

Other Names: Pofadder

The Puff Adder is widespread over much of South Africa and elsewhere further north into Africa. It is a heavy-bodied snake that relies on its excellent camouflage and is reluctant to move. Much of its life is spent in camouflage mode and recent research has shown that when hiding, the Puff Adder will not hiss or strike when approached, as this would give away its presence.

It is an ambush hunter that will coil up into a striking position and await its prey. This can last several days or even weeks. Toads are lured closer with flicking of the tongue.

Puff Adder venom is potently cytotoxic, causing severe pain, swelling, blistering and in many cases severe tissue damage. Polyvalent antivenom is effective and should be administered sooner rather than later. Fatalities are quite rare.

Puff Adder (Bitis arietans), dangerously venomous. -- Repost @michaeldavyphotography The Puff Adder is a relatively common but rarely seen snake, preferring to remain hidden. Their exquisite cryptic camouflage is undeniably beautiful. This shy and reclusive snake would rather retreat, however because of their camouflage they are not easily seen and despite their warning hiss the unfortunate result is they are responsible for many snake bites in rural Africa.
Puff Adder (Bitis arietans), dangerously venomous. -- Repost @mattymuller_ Can’t not have a blast when spending time with a puffy!
Puff Adder (Bitis arietans), dangerously venomous. -- Repost @rangerkidafrica A Puff Adder with some beautiful coloration and patterns but the eyes being most capturing. Getting low and close was the aim of the game with this shot and getting the focal depth and soft background were definite key factors. A beautiful but dangerous snake. With some rather nasty Cytotoxic venom and an ambush strategy watching your step while out in the bush is a must.
Puff Adder (Bitis arietans), dangerously venomous. -- Repost @herping.birder A throwback to the first puff adder I got to photograph in South Africa. This one was found around the farm house at the Kalahari Meerkat Project and was relocated further into the bush.
Repost @marcus.kapp -- One of the most amazing snake encounters I've ever had! Puff Adder (Bitis arietans), dangerously venomous.

Mozambique spitting cobra (Naja mossambica). This snake is responsible for the majority of serious bites (but few fatalities) in Southern Africa, followed by the Puff Adder, Rhombic Night Adder and Stiletto Snake.

The venom is potently cytotoxic - causing pain, swelling, blisters and in many cases severe tissue damage. Antivenom is effective but needs to be administered as soon as possible to prevent tissue damage.

A large, robust adder that averages 90 – 120 cm in Southern Africa but gets much larger elsewhere in Africa. This beautifully-coloured snake occurs from Mtunzini northwards to Richards Bay, St. Lucia and Ndumo, then northwards into Mozambique, eastern Zimbabwe and elsewhere further north.

The Gaboon Adder is threatened by habitat destruction and is listed as ‘Near Threatened’ in the latest Atlas and Red List of the Reptiles of South Africa.

The venom is predominantly cytotoxic, like that of the Puff Adder, but the Gaboon Adder can inject a larger quantity of venom. Additionally, the Gaboon Adder has fangs that may exceed 4 cm in length!

Luckily bites are rare due to the placid nature of this species.
